Being nearby changes how a job goes. It means a marked van in your driveway in Toronto, boots wiped at the door, a clear word about what we are about to do before we do it, and a locksmith who expects to see you again at the hardware store rather than never.
Landlords and property managers in Toronto get a partner who understands turnover. We rekey between tenants, keep the unit keys under one master so you carry a single ring, fit hardware that survives heavy use, and note what was done on each door. When a tenant loses a key at an awkward hour, we already know the building.

Where to start
Residents and business owners in Toronto can use this list to find the service that fits, then read what it involves before anyone comes out. Emergency openings are here. So are rekeys, lock changes, deadbolt and high-security upgrades, commercial door hardware, master keys, safes and key cutting.
Commercial work begins with a walk through the building and a list of doors. For each we note the hardware, the traffic, who needs access and what happens if the key goes missing.
Business lockouts have their own wrinkle: the person at the door is often an employee, not the owner. We ask who can authorise entry, confirm it, and then deal with the door.
About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.
Period hardware on older homes deserves matching parts, not a mismatched modern set. A locksmith who works among such houses keeps finishes and styles that suit them, so a repaired or replaced lock still looks like it belongs to the door.
23%
Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).
Townhouses share walls but usually have their own front door and often a back door or garage. Keying both alike, and checking the strike on the less-used door, is the everyday work in a neighbourhood of attached homes.

What is a restricted keyway and is it worth having for a business?
A restricted or patented keyway is one whose blanks are supplied only through the manufacturer's authorised channels, so duplication is controlled rather than available at an ordinary counter, though the exact authorisation step varies by program and is not always a signed letter. For a company with staff turnover, cleaners and contractors, it means the keys in circulation are far easier to track. It can be introduced during a rekey, on the exterior doors only or across the whole premises, and works alongside a key register.
Can an old mortise lock in a century home be serviced rather than replaced?
Often, and keeping the original hardware is usually worth trying first, since it fits the door and suits the house, though condition and the availability of matching parts decide whether a repair is realistic. The case comes out of the door edge, the decades of dust and hardened grease are cleaned away, a broken spring or worn hub is replaced with a matching part, and the contact surfaces get fresh grease. If a bit key or a cylinder has worn, a new key is cut or the cylinder rebuilt.
I just moved in. Should the new deadbolt be keyed to a new key?
It is a good moment for it. Nobody knows how many copies of a previous owner's key exist, so pinning the new bolt, and the rest of the exterior doors, to one fresh key retires all of them at once. Lock manufacturers list a move as one of the main reasons to rekey. You come away with a known number of keys, each tested in every door it is meant to open.
Can my interior doors be serviced too, and can one key work all of them?
Usually yes to the first, and to the second once the locksmith checks the locks. Interior mortise latches with privacy turn buttons are lighter versions of the entry lock and respond to the same clean and re-spring. Interior locks in a house were sometimes supplied to one bit key, and where the key sections, warding and levers actually match, the locksmith can restore that arrangement so a single key opens several bedroom and bathroom doors. It is a practical thing to have when a child locks a bathroom from inside.
Can I install a smart lock myself?
Many people do, and on a door that already closes perfectly with the standard holes the instructions are manageable. Where a locksmith earns their place is everything around the box: recognizing a bolt that drags before it wears out a motor, enlarging or filling holes cleanly, fitting a reinforced strike, rekeying the override so the old key retires, and setting up the account and codes in a way that is easy to manage later. If you have started and hit a snag, that is a normal call too.
